What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is treated in a furnace to increase its strength and integrity, if it’s ever damaged think of your car windscreen and how that breaks, whereas laminated glass is two thin sheets of glass held together by laminating them together. Think of this as an adhesive material holding it together, however the adhesives cant crack meaning it has stronger integrity.
My windows are extremely hard to close, is there anything that can be done?
Yes! There are a couple of issues which are causing this, it can be an issue with the internal mechanism of the window not working as intended, it could be a misalignment, or it could be a fault with the hinges that are causing friction. Regardless of the issue, we can solve it!
My windows are very draughty, can we reduce this issue?
Yes we can!
If it’s a UPVC or aluminium window, then we will have to conduct a survey of the window in question. Ninety per cent of the time it’s a fault with the window hinges not closing properly and leaving a gap between the sash and the frame.
If it is a timber window, then we can conduct draught proofing, however, this doesn’t always solve the issue where I would recommend looking into additional services such as secondary glazing.
I can’t open my window, all of a sudden it's become really heavy to lift?
This issue only occurs in sash windows however there are three different types of sash window fixing:
- Sash Cord – A sash cord is a cotton rope that is attached to a weight and to your window, usually with sash cords they can snap at the weight or at the sash itself. This can be repaired by pulling a new cord through the internal workings of the window and reattaching it back to the weight. We have two different cord products, standard cotton, and nylon cords.
- Sash Balance – A sash balance is a coiled spring which acts as a counterbalance to the sash. Usually, the issue can occur when the sash balance loses tension or is damaged. This is fixable by either reapplying tension onto the balance, however, if that does not work then a replacement of the balance will be necessary.
- Chain cord – Works in the same way as a sash cord however using a chain means the window is a lot heavier duty. The same fix needs to apply however sourcing the specific chain can take up to 1 week.
What is the difference between cotton and nylon window cords?
Cotton window cords are more frequently used throughout older properties and tend to be cheaper than the stronger nylon alternative.
Are you able to remove the condensation/water from my glass panel?
Unfortunately, this is not possible, This issue occurs when the lining tape which is used as a sealant becomes damaged and starts leaking argon gas.
This gas isn’t dangerous in any way however since there is a hole where the gas is escaping then the issue will persist. The only viable solution would be to replace the double-glazed unit.
